The Agonis – What’s In A Name?
Agonis linearifolia is one of the more remarkable flowering shrubs found growing naturally on the Canning River foreshore. The Greek word agonis means ‘gathering’, ‘cluster’, or ‘collection’, referring to the multitude of seeds borne by the plant. The Agonis, similarly, is a collection or cluster of people, functions and services. It is also a place of gathering for the local community. The name provides a tangible expression of the link between the natural and built environments, celebrating Gosnells’ bright future on the banks for the Canning River.
The building was officially opened in November 2004. The building was central to the revitalisation of the Gosnells town centre. It was a keystone to the City’s commitment to sustainable development. The building was designed and constructed to achieve a high level of energy efficiency and achieved a 4.5 star rating through the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating scheme at the time.
